No Hobby Time - 2015 Recap

Well 2015 was definitely an adjustment as I took on the new title of "Dad".  I realized I have a whole lot less time then before and prioritization was a little rough.  The little free time I had I focused a bit more on my other hobby, the SCA rapier combat.

I did do a lot of assembly.  I found that was a lot easier to knock out between things then full on painting.  Did a bunch of Tau, a ton of Chaos and a little bit of imperial knights.

I did get a few things painted; my adepticon imperial army at the start of the year, and dabbed in a bit of Tau and Chaos.  I also got a shiny new camera but I couldn't figure out how to get the pictures to turn out.  I'll see if I can kick off the new year right by posting progress of what was finished and what I'm working on.  Perhaps updating the blog will inspire me to get moving.

After all, Adepticon is only a few months away!

Blood for the Blood God - Test Model

Looks like our Adepticon 2016 team tournament theme is going to be all Khorny.  So I tried out a test model to see if the colors work.  We're going with dark stone basing, I used some Dragon Forge Ancient Ruins basing to test the color scheme.  Ultimately I'm going to use some Az-tech basing (which is super awesome) once they come in.

I went with a lighter color brass and used more of it then red.

Now that I'm using my camera, I think I screwed up the focus settings.  Not sure what I did but it's only focusing on the front of the model.  Anyone with any ideas on what settings to use?

Union Test Model - Wild West Exodus

I had some fun painting up my first Wild West Exodus model.  I figured I would take it easy and start with a line trooper to figure out the color scheme and progression.

After a few takes, I ended up lightning up both the jacket and pants as well as changed the leather strapping from black to brown.  It looked cool dark, but ultimately the details got lost.  Hope you enjoy!

It was a nice change of pace from painting tons of 40k.  I'm really looking forward to getting my first faction done so I can try out the game.  I've been reading through the rulebook and all the background story.

Hobby Resolutions for 2015

Well, we're already 1/4 the way done for the year, but my hobby calendar pretty much runs on Adpeticon to the next Adepticon.  With the baby here, and an overall shrinking of the hobby stores to play at, my priorities will be shifting this year.  We'll see how that plays out!

I'm pretty into to-do lists at work, so forgive the numbers and bullets!  I'm actually going to print this out and stick this in my hobby area.  Here it goes in no particular order!

1.  Terrain:  I am hell bent on getting some major amounts of terrain done.

-  I have about 10 Zuzzy matts as well as a ton of the urban, ruins, and rolling fields Secret Weapon Miniatures.  I also have 6 feet worth of GW urban boards  and 2 feet worth of Forgeworld urban to paint.

- Put together enough urban terrain as well as ruined temple terrain for two to three 4x6' tables.  Goal will be to have 4 tables so I can have a mini 8 person 40k gaming day

- Put together at least 3 tables worth of dense urban terrain and 1 table of a woodland outpost terrain for Infinity so I can host an 8 person Infinity gaming day

- Make 1 awesome wild west town for some cinematic games of Wild West Exodus

2.  Re-arrange Hobby Area: It has been put off for a long, long time.

Funny enough, when I hobby I tend to bring my supplies up to the kitchen so I can hang with my wife while she is in the next room watching TV.  I have an awesome shop and attached area with gaming tables that needs to be organized and used!  Plus once the little one is able to grab at things, I'm going to want to keep things out of sight/reach in the basement.

3.  Sell Old Armies: I'll probably regret it... but...

Too many cool new stuff comes out.  I need to basically come to the conclusion if I haven't touched or started a project in 5+ years or an army I'm not happy with the paintjob collecting dust, it needs to go.

I can recycle the cash back into my current projects plus it will free up space.  I think part of the hobby collects collectors, so it's hard to get rid of bits and boxes.

4.  Adepticon 40k Team Tournament Army:  let's start early for a change

We've done pretty well every year, but I'm always under a lot of stress towards the end.  Plus we never get any playtesting in.  It's a minor miracle we placed in the top 20% on all categories.  This year I'd like to space out the project through the course of the year.

We're going to try and start brainstorming our theme a little earlier so we can go bigger and better!

5.  Focus on one 40k Army - Imperial Guard: This may be the toughest one

I probably knock out 2 to 3 big 40k projects a year.  This year I'd like to try to do a smaller force for the team tournament but mostly focus on my Imperial Guard.  I have so many cool models that need paint and I'm really going to try and focus and not get distracted by the cool new stuff coming out... cough... Adeptus Mechanicus... cough...

6.  Wild West Exodus: I'm hooked

I've taken the plunge at Adepticon and picked up the Union and Holy Order of Man.  I also backed the kickstarter and will be grabbing Confederates and Golden Army.  Ultimately I'm really looking forward to a laid back change of pace game and focus on painting a few models rather then going crazy with a full force.  Plus it would be fun to help support a new game

7.  Infinity: Already hooked, just need to learn it

The models are awesome, and I love the backstory, terrain, etc.  We have some active guys in the Chicago area and I really want to foster the community and make kick-ass thematic tables.  I'll probably start with Ariadna and branch out from there.  It'll be a total change of pace trying to go with that small scale and really focus on painting individual miniatures.

The big challenge (besides the small detailed scale) is that I need to learn a fairly complex rules and get some regular games in before I jump into tournaments.  The main reason I like tournaments is that I can get some guaranteed competitive painted games in in a set amount of time.  Plus they are "events" so I can block the time.  To get to that level though, I need to be at least somewhat competent in the rules

8.  Grow a local club / gaming group: get a basement group going!

I have the space, and now that I'm not traveling as much it would be nice to get a regular group of guys that can hang at my place and get some games in.  I've run into the issue that a bunch of my friends that I normally game with are an hour away, so it's a bit tough.  So time to make more friends and get a regular beer & bbq league going.

9.  Participate in a Campaign / Thematic Events: I preach this all the time and never do it

I think I have an addiction to list building and maxing potential of lists.  It's what my mind does and spins constantly when I'm doing other things.  I also constantly think about paint schemes and army planning.  When it comes down to it though, there is nothing like a campaign or thematic games that aren't about a one-off tournament setting.  I'd like to do some more of that in my limited free time!

10.  Plan the Adepticon 40k Friendly: Bigger and better for year 14 of Adepticon, 5th of the Friendly

Our planning group that prepares and runs the 40k Friendly has a blast.  Honestly it's probably some of the most fun I've had.  We're really looking forward to making it bigger and better for next year.  It looks like we'll get some more slots open for next year so we'll be doubling-down!

So there you have it... I'll print this sucker off and see how I wrap up next April with what was accomplished this hobby season!

Wild West Exodus - Awesome Kickstarter

Being a big fan of Jim Wappel's blog, I couldn't help but look at the cool Wild West Exodus miniatures.  They really are some amazing sculpts and I love the whole theme.  So at Adepticon I picked up a couple factions (Union and Holy Order) and the rulebook.

The kickstarter is a great chance to get some good discounts on getting into the game.  I'm really digging the Golden Army and the Confederates.  Check it out when you get the chance!

Awesome Infinity Terrain

I am so psyched to get into Infinity.  Probably the most exciting part is the awesome terrain and how to immerse yourself in the urban sprawl.  I stopped by the infinity tournaments and took some shots of their amazing terrain for inspiration.

Now that Adepticon is done, I can work on my resolution to lay off the army building and focus on skirmish games like Infinity and Wild West Exodus!

Team Tournament - Our Finished Product!

Adepticon has come and gone, and we had an awesome time.  Our team, the Adeptus Film Co. runs the 40k Friendly and we had a ton of fun orchestrating the shenanigans of the Friday tournament.  If you played in it, I hope you had a good time!

Here is our final display for the 40k Team Tournament.  I'll post the remaining miniatures I painted later this week.  I was really happy with our showing.  We got into the army showcase and came so close to winning an award.  We ended up finishing 11th overall, which isn't too shabby since none of us had played the armies until the tournament.

Our theme was modeled after the first war of Armageddon, and since we do movie themes, we appropriately did Armageddon as Bruce Willis as the chapter master, Sean Connery as the Great Wolf, and Hugh Jackman as Abbadon.  I should have gotten a better picture of the poster!

In the middle of the ruined city we did a flickering light lift where the knight titan rose up to help out the embattled city.

We were a little bummed out we didn't get best Imperial theme, but we'll have to step up our game for next year and try again!  Now the big debate on which army we pick and how to theme it.

Malcador Infernus - Flame on!

Yes this model's rules are a bit wonky but it should explode in glorious fashion!  I ended up magnetizing the ball joint so I can transport it easier, it is one long model.

Looking forward to the Adepticon Friendly the 13th, we've run the event the last 2 years and have had a blast in the process. On for some crazy fun!

Boom goes the Medusa

The last month since the birth of my daughter has been an eye opener.  I thought, "how much could a newborn take in time, she'll just be sleeping right"?  I was wrong.  The lack of sleep and lack of drive meant the last three weeks I barely painted! With adepticon here, I had to scramble.

Here are the pictures of the finished Medusa ready for the 40k Team Tournament.  It's a nice model, I just wish I would have positioned the gun a little down for ease of transport.  Not that it's that tall, but I could then pack it with other models. It's painted with my Knights Angelus scheme to match all the imperials together in their red & silver glory!

With the baby and work being busy, I dropped from the 40k championship going on as we speak.  I'll put in my day of work then head over to check out the convention.  Unfortunately I also have to paint like a madman to finish off the last of the team tournament miniatures.  Here is what is on the docket tonight, 11 half finished bikes!!!

Tomorrow I'll post up the finished Malcador Infernus as well as play around with my shiny new camera at the convention.

Punisher Pask & Pal

The Astra Militarum 1k list for the team tournament is nearing completion!  I just finished up a Leman Russ Punisher with Pask (I use a commissar), and a Leman Russ Vanquisher as his squad mate to help strip hull points.  I'm using the same red/silver scheme as the rest of my list.

I'm going to magnetize the dozer blades on the front in case I don't want to use them in the game, plus they fit easier in the battlefoam pre-cut templates I have.

Next up on the painting docket is the Malcador Infernus and the Medusa and I'm done with the 1k for that list!
