Adepticon Day 3 Recap - Gladiator

I'm still recovering from 11 games of 40k in 3 days, but I have to say I'm super excited about next year.  As we always think at this time "If I would only prepare a little earlier!" Let's see if I can make that happen.  I had the chance to play with my orks and had a lot of fun throwing vehicles around with the lifta droppa.  Here's a shot of the force, tightly packed on the movement board.

My first game was against a chaos marine khorne list.  The first round was not night fight and the Stompa had a great time throwing a land raider into a brass scorpion... causing the scorpion to be immobilized!  I did a little cheer inside as I thought I wouldn't have to worry about it charging the stompa.  Sadly enough on turn two it rolled a 5+ to fix the drives and came charging into the Stompa, quickly dispatching it.  Night fights on turn 2-4 caused a lot of pain as I rolled terrible for visibility, never getting many shots off.

I made a mistake early by misreading the rules (we'll blame this on a lack of sleep) and turbo boosted my ork nobz forward to contest his quarter... then coming to realize their suicide mission was wasted since I only gained points after turn 2 (not at the start of turn 2).  Ah well, in the end I tied the game due to a lucky scatter of the vortex grenade... it scattered over the top of my opponent's rhino wiping them off the board and allowing me to hold an objective.

WARNING... no my pictures at this point, I was tired and didn't get around to taking out the camera.  Ranting and raving below as the lack of sleep and exhaustion caught up to me!

The second game was against an all infantry imperial fists army.  My opponent showed up 10 minutes late into the round, one of my big pet peeves.  It went downhill from there.  Being a little flustered I wanted to get things moving since I struggled to get 4 turns in the last game.  He started out by trying to disqualify me stating that I couldn't have anything with 4 structure points.  Looking around at the 5 other stompas on the field, I thought there was no way I screwed that rule up.  Another 10 minutes went by and after finally talking to the head judge we got it clarified.  I knew all along it was to keep Reavers off the field...

Rant on... It only got worse.  I started setting up, and explained what my stompa did so there wasn't any confusion.  That wasn't good enough, and I was repeatedly asked "Show me where it is in the book".  Maybe I'm just used to being taken for my word since I'm an honest guy, but constantly being interrupted to take a few minutes to show him each and every rule was getting rude.  I handed him the book right away but that wasn't good enough.  Sadly the forgeworld rules are all over the book (I didn't scan them since the photocopies didn't turn out right).  This wasted another 10+ minutes and caused a ton of frustration.  I would have been happy to walk him through it once I was done setting up.  ...Rant off!

That was probably the one and only game I ever got close to raising my voice in a game and had to restrain myself from stepping up to the guy.  As the game progressed, we both cooled down and chalked it up to a lack of sleep and exhaustion.

Since we wasted 45+ plus setting up, we only got three turns in.  Had I had more time, it probably would have been a landslide since nothing in his army was able to do any damage to the stompa.  In the end I got a solid win, but only 3/4 the points I could have.  I did give him a kill point because my 40 point grotz in reserve didn't come on the table!

Game three was much better, and laid back.  I played a blood angels player and wanting to get my full game in, reserved my whole army.  He had a warhound titan with twin lasers of doom so I didn't want it ko'ing the poor stompa before it got to fire.  Luckily on the reserve roll for turn 2, the only thing that came out was my stompa.  It proceeded to lifta drop the storm raven and randomly throw it 24" back towards the warhound in the opposing corner.  Good times!  The rest of the turns were a good back and forth as the warhound eventually killed off the stompa in a salvo of pew-pew lasers.  In the end it was a pretty even draw in points as we both took objective markers.

Next year I think I'm going to hang up my hat on the Gladiator and try my hand at the team tournament for Warhammer Fantasy.

Yellow Galore; Kans, Bikes, & Bosses (and a Librarian to boot)

Had a very productive painting weekend this weekend and basically finished most of everything for Adepticon.  If my wife ever reads this blog, thanks so much for pulling all the extra hobby time!

I finished the 6 Killa Kans, my Warboss, Big Mek and the Nob Bikers.  In addition I painted up a magnetized jump pack librarian for the team tournament.  Sadly enough, I've gotten only one practice game in with the gladiator ork list, so I'm going to be green... literally. Here's a flood of shots.

It was fun going splotchy on the yellows.  One thing I've realized more and more is Golden Yellow sucks.  It is so translucent but needed for that yellow base. Rather then reapplying after the Sepia wash, I streaked and brushed in straight Sunburst Yellow.  It makes for more dramatic contrast, but on orks I think it works.

Here's the last things I have to do for Adepticon.

- Write up 51 40k jeopardy questions... suck!
- Two 60mm bases for a teammate's attack bikes
- Touch up the Stompa (almost done)
- Reference Sheets & Army Lists
- Work on fixing up the display base for my Blood Angels (going to borrow the kroot one).

Three more nights!

Snikrot & Pals... Adepticon Progress

The home stretch for Adepticon is here!  I have less then a week to get a whole lot of things painted. I finished Snikrot and his 10 buddies last night.  I really like that model, he has a lot of character.  As with the rest of my orks, I'm keeping with the speed painting methods.  Basically I'm doing one color with a wash on most of the model and focusing on one piece to focus - in this case it's a few color highlight/wash of the skin.

This weekend will be jam packed with painting.  I should be able to finish my 5 Blood Angles objective markers tonight, and I'd like to finish or almost finish my nob bikers.

Here is the list of what needs to be done by next Thursday:

- 7 nob bikers
- Warboss on bike
- Mekboy
- 6 Killa Kans
- finish the stompa
- static grass all the orks
- clean up the old display base
- print out all the lists, signs, reference materials, etc.
- write 51 jeopardy 40k questions for the quiz show

Easy, right?

B.A. Priests done, & lots of assembly

It's crunch time now with only a few weeks to Adepticon.  It's time to maximize painting time when I'm not traveling and I really need to get some practice games in.  Here's the finished product of the priests and the non helmeted assault marines (minus backpacks).

So what does my hobby A.D.D. do?  Makes me want to procrastinate by assembling a bunch of models.  It was nice to spend some time on the couch with my wife and I got to put together the storm raven, two dreads and 5 death company.  I bought the forgeworld chaplain dread awhile back and by adding bits of the new furioso dread, was able to make a sweet looking death company dreadnought.

I've decided in my gladiator list to add Snikrot & Pals to one of the sidebars.  Traditionally there is one of those missions where a model is able to carry some sort of nasty titan killing vortex grenade.  Snikrot should be the perfect vessel.  I bought the standard kommandos, but needed a few more so I added some old backpacks and bitz to a few ork boyz to make them part of the crew.  I had the chance to make two of the new ork burna boyz too... great plastic kit.

Currently on the workbench is my custom Dante (figured I'd make him look better in plastic) along with the Sanguinator.  As I was working on the priests' power swords I worked on these at the same time.  Additionally in this batch I'll be painting the chapter banner and power fist for the Sanguinary Guard.

Tomorrow will be a non-stop hobby day at the Chicago Battle Bunker where I'm hoping to get a practice game in with my Blood Angels and Ork Gladiator list.

Stompa Paint Scheme & Ork Boyz finished!

Just finished up my last batch of 30 ork boyz.  That puts me at the 90 I need to have finished for Adepticon.  Now the tons of other miniatures I have to do is another story.  Here's a couple quick shots of the latest mob.

I have primed and ready to go the mekboy stompa.  Going with the bad moons theme I'd like to have a good portion of it yellow.  Either that or primarily black with maybe a large painted yellow moon on the belly.  What are your thoughts?

I'll have a full day open tomorrow to get my painting on, time to make some major progress.  I'm debating on whether I keep going on the ork kick or switch gears back to Blood Angels.  Updates tomorrow!

Ork Skin: AoBR Orks

I needed a break from painting some Blood Angels so there is nothing like speed painting some orks.  Here's the new ork skin method I'm trying out, would love to get your feedback. These orks below haven't been finished completely, but they're tabletop ready.

The goal with this skin is to not be neon green or overly green.  I wanted a dirtier / more earthy tone.  The mystery ingredient is gryphonne sepia.  It rocks.

- Base Gretchin Green (foundation paint)
- Wash fairly heavy with Thraka Green (wash)
- Paint 80% (tops of muscles) back with Gretchin Green
- Wash with Gryphonne Sepia (wash)
- Highlight 20% (tops of muscles) with Camo Green

For a fast paint scheme, I'm fairly happy with how it turns out.  It's enough to at least make the skin a decent focal point which allows me to cheat a little on the rest of the model with base colors and washing only.

Tonight I'm getting a game in with the Sanguinary Guard List... will bring the camera for good pictures and a real report.

What's Yellow & Green and Washed all over?

That's 30 orks trying to be batched painted at once.  I had a great Saturday playing in the Adepticon Team Tournament Primer, and I need a couple of days to collect my thoughts on which Blood Angels to do before moving forward.

With that said, there is nothing like doing some speed painting of orks.  Here's the batch all together! I'm hobbying outside of the shop so I can spend some time with my wife before she's off traveling for the week.  Later this week I'll pull together a how to on the ork skin, with the mystery wash ingredient!

Ork Clan Choice

Been furiously putting together orks, and working on my speed painting plan.  The big question I have is what clan do I go with?  My previous edition of orks were Bad Moonz.  Love the icons, might be worth going again with them. What are your thoughts?

Bad Moonz: Yellow, which is a pain in the butt but looks really nice.  I like the life of excess that they live and how they pimp out everything.  Plus the Moon icon is cool.

Goffs: What I think of when I think of orks.  Horns & black/white checks.  They're big and mean like orks should be.

Blood Axes: Awesome conversion potential here since they like to mimic imperial guard.  Plus there are a ton of third party resin pieces that fit well (greatcoat orks).

Here's the list I'm thinking up for the gladiator.  Basically you get a 1750 list and then get to choose which 500 point sidebar you pick each round. The Mek and one unit of grots ride around in the stompa!

Main list: 1750

HQ: Big Mek with kustom force field, three grot oilers
HQ: Warboss on bike with Klaw, attack squig, cybork, & boss pole
Elite: 5 Lootas
Elite: 5 Lootas
Troop: 10 grots with herder
Troop: 30 shoota boyz with the nob with klaw
Troop: 30 shoota boyz with 2 big shootas with nob with klaw
Troop: 30 slugga boyz with nob with klaw (mainly using them since I have a ton of slugga boyz lying around)
Heavy: Big Mek Stompa

Sidebar A

Troop: 7 Nob bikers inclusive of painboy, warbanner, 2 uge choppas, 3 klaws.  Complex unit.
Troop: 10 grots with herder

Sidebar B
Troop: Dread with 4 CC weapons & extra armor and grot
Heavy: 3 Killa Kans with rokkits
Heavy: 3 Killa Kans with grotzookas
Elite: 6 lootas
